How to convert AAC to MP3
Add one AAC file, choose 128, 192, 256 or 320 kbps, then download the MP3. The default is 128 kbps. The conversion runs on your device, so the file is not uploaded.
Why convert AAC to MP3
Some older players, car stereos and apps accept MP3 but not AAC. If yours does not open an .aac file, an MP3 copy may work. This free AAC to MP3 converter handles one file at a time, with no account.
Choose a bitrate for the MP3
AAC and MP3 are both lossy. Converting from one to the other encodes the audio again, so it does not add detail and can lose a little more. A lower bitrate may make a smaller file, and a higher one can retain more detail. Size and sound depend on the source and the bitrate you pick.
Another input or another format
For AAC audio inside an M4A file, try M4A to MP3. To convert other formats to MP3, use the MP3 converter, and for a different output, use the audio converter.
Need a transcript instead of an MP3?
You can send your original AAC to AAC transcription without converting it here first. Transcription is separate from this free local converter: it uploads prepared audio and requires an account. Speaker labels are available when selected. Eligible personal accounts can receive 30 free minutes once after successful card verification, or with their first purchase if not already granted.

Frequently asked questions
Is this AAC to MP3 converter free?
Yes. Converting one AAC file to MP3 in your browser is free and needs no account. Transcription is a separate service with its own account and minute pricing.
Does converting AAC to MP3 upload my file?
No. The converter processes the AAC in your browser and downloads the MP3 to your device. Choosing transcription separately uploads prepared audio.
Which MP3 bitrate can I choose?
The converter offers 128, 192, 256 and 320 kbps, with 128 kbps selected first. Higher settings can keep more detail from the AAC, and the MP3 gets larger.
Will converting AAC to MP3 improve the sound?
No. Both formats are lossy, so the MP3 is another encode of audio that was already compressed. Keep your original AAC file.
Can I convert an M4A file to MP3 too?
Often yes, because M4A files commonly hold AAC audio. There is a separate M4A to MP3 page for them.
Will every AAC file convert and play on every device?
Conversion depends on the audio inside the file and your browser or device. Check that the player you plan to use supports MP3.
Can I transcribe the AAC instead?
Yes, through the separate Hushscript transcription service, which uploads prepared audio and requires an account. Speaker labels are available when selected.
