Frequently asked questions

Transcription, privacy, pricing, formats, and the free tools, all answered.

The basics

What is Hushscript?

Hushscript turns audio or video into a clean, speaker-labeled transcript you can relabel and export. It's private by design: your video never uploads, and your audio is deleted the moment the transcript is ready.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Hushscript runs in your web browser, so there's nothing to download or install.

Can I try it before signing up?

Yes. Drop in a file and you'll get a 30-second, speaker-labeled preview with no account. To transcribe the whole thing, sign up. You get 30 free minutes to start.

How do I transcribe a file?

Drop in your audio or video, preview the first 30 seconds, then sign up to transcribe the rest. You get the full speaker-labeled transcript to relabel and export.

Do I need a meeting bot?

No. Hushscript is upload-based: record however you like, then upload the file when you choose. Nothing joins your live calls.

What happens after transcription?

When you choose Generate Insights, Hushscript creates the complete result in one optional free run at no minute cost: summaries, actions, decisions, open questions, quotes, chapters, speaker topics, subject clusters, export suggestions, terminology and profanity findings, and cleanup suggestions. The result is tied to the current transcript revision. Cleanup appears in Edit and changes nothing until you approve it.

What can I transcribe?

Almost anything you can record: interviews, meetings, podcasts, lectures, voice memos, or phone-call recordings. Common audio or video formats work up to 10 hours, with no file-size limit – large video and audio are prepared right in your browser. You can also merge related recordings before starting.

Can I transcribe a video?

Yes. Your video never uploads. Hushscript prepares its audio track in your browser and sends only the audio needed for transcription. Compatible audio passes through without re-encoding; conversion runs locally only when required.

Can I transcribe a YouTube or online video?

Hushscript transcribes files you upload. It doesn't pull video from YouTube or other links, and downloading someone else's YouTube video generally breaks YouTube's Terms of Service. If the recording is yours (or you hold the rights and have the file), upload it and we'll transcribe it.

Is there a minimum length?

No. Short clips transcribe fine. Recordings can run up to 10 hours, with no file-size limit – large video and audio are prepared right in your browser.

How long does transcription take?

Usually a fraction of the recording's length, though it depends on file size and current load. A short clip is quick; a multi-hour file takes longer.

Pricing & billing

How does the referral program work?

Your first paid pack will include up to 240 bonus minutes on top. The person who invited you may also earn Hushscript minutes when you buy. See the Referral Program for eligibility and reward details.

Can I download a receipt for a minute purchase?

Yes. Completed purchases appear in Billing with a stable receipt number and a downloadable Hushscript payment receipt. It confirms the recorded payment and is not a tax invoice.

Is it free?

Hushscript isn't free: we use top-tier AI for transcription, so it's pay-as-you-go with no subscription. You do get 30 free minutes to try, and the in-browser tools are genuinely free.

How do I get my 30 free minutes?

Add a payment method. A card is the quickest way: we place a temporary $1 hold to validate it (released right away, never charged) and credit your 30 free minutes on the spot. With an alternative payment method available in your country, the 30 minutes are credited once, with your first minutes-pack purchase.

Do I need a card?

No. A card is the fastest route to your 30 free minutes, but it isn't required; you can use the alternative payment methods available in your country. Pay with one of those and your 30 free minutes arrive with your first purchase.

What do the packs cost?

See the Pricing page for the current packs and prices. It's pay-as-you-go with no subscription, and the bigger the pack, the lower the per-minute rate.

How much does a minute cost?

From about a penny a minute on the largest pack, more on smaller ones. The Pricing page has the exact rates.

Is there a subscription?

No. You only ever pay for prepaid packs you choose to buy. Nothing recurring, nothing to cancel.

Why do you ask for a payment method?

It keeps non-paying abusers off the paid engine, so we can give real free minutes away. A card is verified with a temporary $1 hold that's released right away, not a charge. A card isn't required; alternative methods work too.

Am I charged just for signing up?

No. Validating a card places a temporary $1 hold that's released immediately; you're only charged when you buy a pack.

Do my minutes expire?

Yes – after 180 days without a completed transcription or minute purchase. Either activity resets the window, and we email you before expiry.

How are minutes counted?

By the length of the recording you transcribe, so long silent stretches still count. To save minutes, trim dead air first with our free tools.

Does video cost more than audio?

No. You're billed by length, not file type. For a video, only the extracted audio is sent anyway.

How are Insights billed?

All Insights, including cleanup, are free and generated together.

What if a transcription fails?

You're not charged. The minutes held for a job are released back to your balance automatically if it fails on our side.

Can I get a refund?

No. Minutes are delivered to your balance the moment payment succeeds, so the sale is complete at purchase and all sales are final and non-refundable. Failed transcriptions return their minutes automatically, and genuine billing errors are always corrected: email support@hushscript.com. Where the law that applies to you grants a non-waivable refund right, that still stands.

How do I pay, and is it secure?

Card and the alternative payment methods available in your country, handled by Stripe. We never receive or store your full card number.

Do the free tools cost anything?

No. The in-browser tools are genuinely free, with no signup.

What does one Insights run include?

When you choose Generate Insights, one optional free run creates summaries, actions, decisions, open questions, quotes, chapters, speaker topics, subject clusters, export suggestions, terminology and profanity findings, and cleanup against the current transcript revision.

Where do I review cleanup suggestions?

Cleanup is part of the optional Insights result and appears in the Edit tab. Nothing changes until you approve it.

Privacy & security

Do you keep my audio?

No. It's deleted the moment your transcript is ready, and the speech engine retains nothing.

Does my video upload?

No. A compatible audio track is copied in your browser without re-encoding, and local conversion runs only when required. The video never leaves your device.

How long do you keep my transcripts?

They stay private to your account until you delete them, close your account, or an auto-delete rule you set removes them. Set an account-wide default (keep everything until you delete it, or auto-remove it after 7, 30, 90, or 365 days) and override it for any single transcript that needs a different schedule.

What is private mode?

Private mode runs speech recognition only, saves no transcript to your account, and skips post-processing Insights. It returns a password-protected .husharchive instead. Medical mode and translation aren't available in private mode.

Can I delete a transcript?

Yes. Remove any transcript in one click.

Can I delete my account?

Yes. Delete it yourself in your profile, after a confirmation step. Any minutes you've bought aren't refunded when you delete the account.

Do you train on my recordings?

No. We don't train on, sell, or reuse your recordings, and the speech engine runs with zero retention.

Is my data encrypted?

Yes. Uploads and downloads run over HTTPS (encrypted in transit), and your transcripts are encrypted at rest, including the transcript itself plus any title or speaker names you set. If our storage were ever leaked, they'd be unreadable ciphertext. Passwords are stored hashed, and access is restricted.

Where is my data processed?

In the EU for users in the EU, EEA, Switzerland, and the UK; in the US otherwise. Either way, your audio is deleted the moment your transcript is ready.

Who actually does the transcription?

A third-party speech-to-text provider processes your audio for the sole purpose of generating your transcript. It doesn't keep your audio or train on it.

Are you GDPR compliant? What about my data rights?

Hushscript is operated under Hong Kong's PDPO, and for EU, EEA, UK, and Swiss users your audio is processed in the EU. You can access, correct, or delete your data, or request a DPA, via support@hushscript.com. We describe what the architecture does and don't make certification claims.

Do you use cookies or tracking?

Our public site uses Google Analytics, Google Ads, Meta Pixel, and Ahrefs Web Analytics. The app loads no analytics or ad scripts and sends no browser product telemetry. Our API measures successful server actions and reports content-free signup, payment-method, checkout, purchase, and selected product milestones. We never send transcript text, filenames, prompts, questions, answers, or form contents to analytics. Where required, your consent controls browser and server-side analytics and advertising. See the Cookie Policy.

Is it safe for sensitive recordings like medical, legal, or journalism?

That's what it's built for: the video never uploads, the audio is deleted after transcription, and the engine keeps nothing. You're responsible for having the right to record and transcribe the material.

Can I get a record of deletion?

Dedicated transcript, AI artifact, and account deletion flows return a downloadable JSON receipt recording what was removed and when.

Accuracy & quality

How accurate is it?

It depends on the recording. Clear audio transcribes very well; background noise and crosstalk lower accuracy. Better input gives a better transcript.

How do I get the best results?

Use the clearest recording you have: close mic, minimal background noise, one person speaking at a time. Converting or compressing a noisy file won't add detail that isn't there.

Can I help the AI with names or jargon?

Yes. Before upload, apply a saved dictionary for names, abbreviations, brands, drug names, and domain terms; apply a saved prompt preset for transcription behavior; then add one-off keyterms or a one-off custom prompt for the specific recording. These inputs affect transcription, not Insights.

Why does my transcript have errors?

Transcripts are generated by machine and can contain mistakes, so review them before relying on them, especially names, numbers, and technical terms.

Can I edit or correct the transcript?

Yes. Edit transcript segments in the app, split or merge segments, reassign speakers, undo and redo changes, find and replace text, rename speakers, add tags, and revert to the original transcript if needed.

Does it include timestamps?

Yes. Timestamps are included; export as SRT for caption-ready lines.

Speakers

Are speakers separated?

Yes. Every transcript gets free, automatic speaker labels, so who-said-what is clear.

How many speakers can it handle?

Multiple speakers are separated automatically, with no paid speaker cap.

Can I rename speakers?

Yes. Change 'Speaker 1' to a real name in one click, across the whole transcript.

Does speaker labeling cost extra?

No. It's free on every transcript, not a paid add-on.

Languages

Which languages can it transcribe?

It detects the language automatically and transcribes around 99 languages, with top-tier accuracy in 18. See the Languages page for the full list.

Do I have to pick the language?

No. It's detected automatically. The Languages page has the full list.

What if my recording has more than one language?

It handles code-switching between supported languages within a single recording.

Do you translate to another language?

Yes. Choose translation targets before upload. Translated transcripts appear as language tabs and can be exported per language.

Which languages can I translate into?

13 today: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Hindi, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Thai, Turkish, and Vietnamese, all chosen before you start. That's separate from the roughly 99 languages Hushscript transcribes automatically: the source is whatever's spoken in your recording, and the 13 are the targets you pick for the output.

Does translating cost extra?

Yes. Translation is priced at roughly a quarter of the transcript's length per target language, billed as a surcharge on top of transcription. Pick your target languages before you start; there's no subscription, so you pay only for the languages you choose.

Files, formats & exports

Which file formats are supported?

Common audio and video formats include MP3, M4A, WAV, AAC, FLAC, OGG, MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, and more. Compatible audio uploads as-is. Video audio is copied out without re-encoding when possible, with local conversion only when required.

My format isn't supported. What do I do?

Email support@hushscript.com and we'll add it to our system.

How large or long can a file be?

Up to 10 hours long, with no file-size limit – large video and audio are staged and prepared right in your browser. There is no plan-based daily/monthly allowance; high service-safety and active-job safeguards apply.

What can I export?

TXT, SRT, VTT, CSV, TSV, Markdown, HTML, RTF, XML, JSON, DOCX, PDF, XLSX, ODS, ODT, ASS, TTML, SBV, LRC, FCPXML, or EDL: 21 formats total, no watermark and no lock-in. Prebuilt archive packs (Subtitle, Research, Office, Editor, or All formats) bundle several at once, shipped as a password-protected .husharchive with a manifest and checksums, or a standard AES-encrypted ZIP if that's what the other end needs. Free Insights can also generate AI show-notes and meeting-minutes exports.

Can I get subtitles or captions?

Yes. Export SRT for timestamped, caption-ready lines. Already have a subtitle file and only need a format swap? Use the free SRT↔VTT converter.

Does exporting cost extra?

No. Every export format is included at no extra charge.

Are subtitle formats included, or a paid add-on?

Included. SRT, VTT, ASS, TTML, SBV, and LRC, plus FCPXML and EDL for editors, are part of the same 21 export formats every transcript includes, not a separate product or a paid add-on.

Do subtitle exports include speaker labels?

Yes. Captions come back with the speaker already attributed, free on every transcript. It's not a paid add-on, and it carries into every subtitle format you export.

Free in-browser tools

Are the free tools really free?

Yes. They run entirely in your browser, with no signup and nothing uploaded.

Do my files upload when I use a tool?

No. Everything happens on your device; your files never leave it.

What can the free tools do?

Convert between formats, extract audio from video, compress audio, and more. See the free tools page.

Is there a file-size limit on the free tools?

They handle files up to about 5 GB, processed locally on your device.

Why are they free?

Because they run on your device, they cost us nothing to operate, so there's no catch and no incentive to harvest your files.
