Convert subtitle formats in three steps

Convert VTT, ASS, SBV, or TTML to SRT
If you need an SRT file, choose your existing VTT, ASS, SBV, or TTML file and keep SRT selected. That covers ASS to SRT and SBV to SRT. The converter writes SRT cue numbers and timestamps. It reads the subtitle cues and rewrites them, so the output is not a byte-for-byte copy of the source.

The tool needs a file with parseable timed cues. If it finds no cues, it cannot produce a converted download. Plain TXT is not an output here; to turn subtitles into plain text, use the SRT to TXT converter. To turn plain text into SRT, use the TXT to SRT converter, which estimates the cue times; this converter cannot, because untimed text has none.
What is an SRT file? What is a VTT file?
An SRT file stores subtitle cues as plain text: a cue number, a start and end timestamp separated by a comma, and the caption text. A VTT (WebVTT) file stores the same kind of cues but opens with a WEBVTT header and uses periods in its timestamps. Can I convert ASS, SBV, or TTML to SRT?
Yes, when the file contains cues the tool can read. Select SRT as the output. Check the download if your source uses styling, identifiers, settings, or metadata, because these may not carry over.
Can I convert SRT to TXT or TXT to SRT?
SRT to TXT is a separate tool: use the SRT to TXT converter at /tools/srt-to-txt, which strips cue numbers and timecodes and also reads VTT, SBV, ASS and TTML. TXT to SRT is also a separate tool: the TXT to SRT converter at /tools/txt-to-srt splits plain text into cues and gives them estimated times, which are not synced to any recording. This converter needs a file that already has cue times.
