Zoom’s own transcript lives at the end of a chain of conditions: a paid plan, cloud recording turned on, the host seat, the right settings before the meeting started. Zoom transcription with Hushscript needs exactly one thing, and it’s a thing you may already have: the recording file. If the meeting produced an MP4 or M4A, you can have a speaker-labeled transcript of it regardless of whose plan, whose settings, or whose host seat produced the recording.

From recording to transcript in three steps

Find the file: local recordings are on the computer of whoever pressed record, cloud recordings download from the Zoom web portal. The transcript Zoom didn’t give you

Most of the “can I get a Zoom transcript?” questions are really plan and permission questions. The free plan doesn’t do cloud transcripts. Local recordings never get one. Participants don’t get the host’s cloud files unless the host shares them. The upload route replaces that whole decision tree with one question: do you have the file? A local MP4 from a free account transcribes exactly as well as a cloud recording from an enterprise one.

Nothing joins, nothing connects

Hushscript is not a Zoom app. It never asks for your Zoom login, appears in a participant list, or touches your calendar. That matters for the meetings where a visible recorder would change the conversation, and for workplaces where installing meeting integrations needs an approval you’d rather not chase. The recording already exists; transcribing it afterward adds no one to the call it came from.

Both Zoom files work

A Zoom recording is usually two files: the MP4 video and an audio-only M4A. Either one works. Drop the MP4 and the audio track is extracted right in your browser, so the video itself never uploads – a 700 MB recording of an all-hands doesn’t need to go anywhere. Or use the smaller M4A directly; since it’s audio, a Dropbox, Google Drive, or OneDrive share link works for it too, no local download needed.

After the transcript: minutes, actions, decisions

A meeting recording is rarely the goal – the record of what was decided is. Speaker labels are automatic and free; rename them once and every export shows real names.

What happens to the recording

The extracted audio is deleted the moment your transcript is ready – it is not stored, and recordings are never used to train models. Transcripts are encrypted at rest, retention is your setting, and private mode can skip saving a transcript to the account entirely. EU, EEA, Swiss, and UK audio is processed in the EU. What Zoom transcription costs

On the largest pack ($49.99 for 100 h, about $0.50 an hour), the weekly one-hour team sync costs about $0.50 to transcribe – roughly $26 for a year of them. There’s no subscription and no per-seat license; a quiet month costs nothing.
