How to convert MP3 to OGG

Add one MP3 file, wait for the conversion to finish, then download the .ogg file. The converter decodes the MP3 and encodes it as OGG Vorbis in your browser, so the file is not uploaded. Expect a slower start the first time, while the OGG module loads.

Why convert an MP3 to .ogg

Some players, tools and projects prefer OGG Vorbis, an open format. If one of them rejects your MP3, a converted copy may fix it. Check what your target accepts first, because some accept OGG with a different codec, such as Opus.

What the conversion does to quality

MP3 and OGG Vorbis are both lossy. Converting MP3 to OGG encodes the audio again: it does not bring back detail the MP3 already lost, and it can lose a little more. There is no bitrate menu, so the output size follows the source and its length. Keep the original MP3.

Other formats

For a different output, such as Opus or M4A, use the audio converter. To turn an OGG file into MP3, use OGG to MP3.

Need a transcript instead of an OGG file?

You can send your original MP3 to MP3 transcription without converting it here first. Transcription is separate from this free local converter: it uploads prepared audio and requires an account. Speaker labels are available when selected. Eligible personal accounts can receive 30 free minutes once after successful card verification, or with their first purchase if not already granted.

Frequently asked questions

Is this MP3 to OGG converter free?

Yes. Converting one MP3 file to OGG in your browser is free and needs no account. Transcription is a separate service with its own account and minute pricing.

Does converting MP3 to .ogg upload my file?

No. The converter processes the MP3 in your browser and downloads the OGG to your device. Choosing transcription separately uploads prepared audio.

Which codec does the OGG file use?

Vorbis. OGG is a container, and this tool writes Vorbis audio in a .ogg file. For an Opus file, pick Opus in the audio converter.

Can I choose a bitrate for the OGG?

No. This converter has no bitrate menu and uses one fixed Vorbis quality setting. File size depends on the source and its length.

Why is the first conversion slower?

OGG output runs on an extra conversion module that loads the first time you use it. After that the module is already in the page.

Will the OGG play on every device?

Not necessarily. Playback depends on your player, and conversion depends on the audio inside the MP3 and your browser or device. Test the OGG where you plan to use it.

Can I transcribe the MP3 instead?

Yes, through the separate Hushscript transcription service, which uploads prepared audio and requires an account. Speaker labels are available when selected.
