How to convert MP3 to FLAC
Add one MP3 file, wait for the conversion to finish, then download the FLAC. This MP3 to FLAC converter decodes the MP3 and writes the audio as FLAC in your browser, so the file is not uploaded.
What an MP3 to FLAC conversion does
FLAC is a lossless format, but your MP3 is not. The MP3 already lost some detail when it was made, and converting to FLAC cannot bring it back. The result is a lossless copy of the audio as the MP3 sounds today, in a larger file. If you still have the original recording or a CD rip, convert that instead.
When a FLAC copy helps
Pick FLAC when a player, music library or editor asks for it, or when you plan to edit the audio and want to avoid another lossy encode. It is not a way to upgrade an MP3. This free converter handles one file at a time.
Another input or another format
To convert a WAV, M4A or OGG file to FLAC, use the audio converter. To go from FLAC to a small file, use FLAC to MP3, and for an uncompressed copy, use FLAC to WAV.
Need a transcript instead of a FLAC?
You can send your original MP3 to MP3 transcription without converting it here first. Transcription is separate from this free local converter: it uploads prepared audio and requires an account. Speaker labels are available when selected. Eligible personal accounts can receive 30 free minutes once after successful card verification, or with their first purchase if not already granted.

Frequently asked questions
Is this MP3 to FLAC converter free?
Yes. Converting one MP3 file to FLAC in your browser is free and needs no account. Transcription is a separate service with its own account and minute pricing.
Does converting MP3 to FLAC upload my file?
No. The converter processes the MP3 in your browser and downloads the FLAC to your device. Choosing transcription separately uploads prepared audio.
Will converting MP3 to FLAC improve the sound?
No. Detail removed when the MP3 was encoded stays gone. The FLAC holds the decoded MP3 audio without further loss, so it sounds like the MP3.
Why is the FLAC bigger than the MP3?
FLAC compresses the audio without discarding anything, and it has to store everything the MP3 decodes to. Expect a much larger file than the MP3.
Why convert MP3 to FLAC?
Some players, libraries and editors want FLAC, and a FLAC copy avoids another lossy encode if you edit and save the audio again. It does not make an MP3 lossless.
Can I choose a FLAC compression level?
No. This converter has no compression or bit depth menu, only the one FLAC output.
Will the FLAC play on every device?
Not necessarily. Playback depends on your player, and conversion depends on the audio inside the MP3 and your browser or device. Test the FLAC where you plan to use it.
Can I transcribe the MP3 instead?
Yes, through the separate Hushscript transcription service, which uploads prepared audio and requires an account. Speaker labels are available when selected.
