How to convert FLAC to WAV

Add one FLAC file, wait for the conversion to finish, then download the WAV. The converter decodes the FLAC and writes uncompressed PCM audio in your browser, so the file is not uploaded.

Why convert a FLAC file to WAV

Some audio editors, DAWs, players and hardware open WAV but not FLAC. A WAV copy gives them a file they accept. This free FLAC to WAV converter handles one file at a time, with no account.

What to expect from the WAV

FLAC is already lossless, so this step adds no lossy compression. The WAV is uncompressed, so it is larger than the FLAC. It is written as 24-bit PCM at the source sample rate and channel count, which can make it about 1.5 times the size of a 16-bit WAV of the same audio. Hardware or software that only takes 16-bit WAV may not accept it. Test the WAV in the app where you plan to use it, and keep the original FLAC.

Need a smaller file instead?

To make a smaller listening copy, use FLAC to MP3 and pick a bitrate. For other formats, use the audio converter.

Need a transcript instead of a WAV?

You can send your original FLAC to FLAC transcription without converting it here first. Transcription is separate from this free local converter: it uploads prepared audio and requires an account. Speaker labels are available when selected. Eligible personal accounts can receive 30 free minutes once after successful card verification, or with their first purchase if not already granted.

Frequently asked questions

Is this FLAC to WAV converter free?

Yes. Converting one FLAC file to WAV in your browser is free and needs no account. Transcription is a separate service with its own account and minute pricing.

Does converting FLAC to WAV upload my file?

No. The converter processes the FLAC in your browser and downloads the WAV to your device. Choosing transcription separately uploads prepared audio.

Does FLAC to WAV lose quality?

No lossy compression is applied. FLAC is lossless, and the converter decodes it and writes uncompressed PCM at 24-bit, so a 16-bit or 24-bit FLAC keeps its samples. A FLAC deeper than 24-bit is stored at 24-bit in the WAV.

Why is the WAV bigger than the FLAC?

FLAC compresses the audio without losing it, and WAV does not compress at all. The WAV is 24-bit PCM, so it can be about 1.5 times the size of a 16-bit WAV of the same audio. Keep the FLAC if storage matters.

Why convert FLAC to WAV?

Some editors, DAWs, players and hardware accept WAV but not FLAC. Converting first can avoid an import error.

Will tags carry over?

No. Tags such as title and artist are not copied, so the WAV holds the audio only. Keep the FLAC as your tagged original.

Will every FLAC file convert?

Conversion depends on the FLAC itself and your browser or device. Playback of the WAV depends on your player.

Can I transcribe the FLAC instead?

Yes, through the separate Hushscript transcription service, which uploads prepared audio and requires an account. Speaker labels are available when selected.
