SRT to TXT converter: subtitles to plain text
Paste an SRT or VTT file, or choose one, and get the text without cue numbers or timestamps. Copy it or download a .txt file. Everything runs in your browser, with no account or upload.
Subtitle checklist
Compares the cues with the Netflix Timed Text Style Guide for English: up to 42 characters per line, 2 lines per subtitle, 20 characters per second, and at least 5/6 of a second per cue. It is a checklist for spotting problems, not a compliance or accessibility check.
Choose a subtitle file or paste its text to run the checklist.
Cue numbers count the cues in file order, starting at 1.

Why is this free? Hushscript runs it entirely in your browser. No server processes your file, so there's nothing to charge for.
How to convert SRT to TXT
Choose your .srt file in the tool above, or paste its contents into the box. The text appears below as soon as the file is read: no cue numbers, no 00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:03,000 lines, just the words. Press Copy text, or Download .txt to save a file with the same name as your subtitle file. Change an option and the text updates at once. The file is read in your browser and never uploaded, and you do not need an account.
VTT to TXT and other subtitle formats
The tool also converts VTT to text. It reads WebVTT with its header, NOTE comments, cue identifiers and positioning settings, and it accepts SBV, ASS and TTML files as well. Whichever format you start with, you get the same plain text. VTT voice tags such as <v Alice> turn into Alice: before the line, so you can see who is speaking. Switch off Keep speaker labels if you only want the words. If you need a different subtitle format instead of text, the SRT to VTT converter and the subtitle converter handle format-to-format conversion. To go from plain text to subtitles, use the TXT to SRT converter.
Paragraphs, one line per cue, or timecodes
Paragraphs joins the cue lines into running text and starts a new paragraph where the speech pauses for two seconds or more. Use it for an article, notes or a transcript you want to read. One line per cue keeps each cue on its own line, which suits editing, translation and diffing. Tick Keep timestamps to write one [00:01:02] text line per cue, an SRT to TXT with timecodes: handy for finding a moment again or pasting into notes.
Clean up the text
- Remove formatting tags strips
<i>,<b>,<font>and color tags, inline cue timestamps and ASS or SSA overrides such as{\an8}, and decodes entities like&. Plain curly braces in the dialogue stay. - Remove repeated lines drops a line that matches the one before it, which cleans up auto-generated captions that repeat the last line in each new cue.
- Keep speaker labels controls VTT voice tags and upper-case speaker prefixes such as
JOHN:. A sentence like “Note: this stays” is not mistaken for a speaker.
Subtitle checklist: SRT checker and line length
Under the converter, a collapsed Subtitle checklist works as a quick SRT checker. For every file it shows the cue count and where the last cue ends, then counts cues that overlap, are out of order, are shorter than 5/6 of a second, run faster than 20 characters per second, have a line over 42 characters, have more than two lines, or are empty. It lists the first few cue numbers for each so you can jump to them in your editor. The limits are the ones in the Netflix English Timed Text Style Guide and its subtitle timing guidelines, and they apply to English adult programming. Other languages, children’s programs and other broadcasters use different numbers. Treat it as a list of places to look, not as a compliance or accessibility pass.
Need subtitles from audio or video?
This tool works on a subtitle file you already have. If you only have the recording, generate subtitles from video with Hushscript. That is a separate transcription service: it requires an account and uploads prepared audio for recognition. Eligible personal accounts get 30 free minutes once, after card verification or with the first purchase.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert SRT to TXT?
Choose your .srt file or paste its text into the box above. The tool removes the cue numbers and timecodes and shows plain text straight away. Copy it, or press Download .txt to save a text file named after your subtitle file.
Can I convert VTT to TXT or VTT to text?
Yes. The same box reads WebVTT, including the WEBVTT header, NOTE blocks, cue identifiers and cue settings. SBV, ASS and TTML files work too. VTT voice tags such as <v Alice> become Alice: before the line unless you turn speaker labels off.
How do I keep the timecodes when converting SRT to TXT?
Tick Keep timestamps. Each cue then becomes one line that starts with its start time in brackets, such as [00:01:02] Hello there. Hours, minutes and whole seconds are shown, and the milliseconds are dropped.
Will the text come out as paragraphs or one line per cue?
Your choice. Paragraphs joins the cue lines into running text and starts a new paragraph after a pause of two seconds or more between cues. That cut-off is this tool's own setting, not a standard. One line per cue keeps every cue on its own line.
What does Remove repeated lines do?
It drops a line that is identical to the one just before it. Auto-generated captions often repeat the previous line in the next cue, so the text reads twice without it. It only compares neighboring lines, so a phrase repeated later in the file stays.
Are speaker names and formatting tags removed?
Formatting tags such as <i>, <b>, colors, inline timestamps and {\an8} or other ASS overrides are removed by default, and common entities like & are turned back into characters. Speaker labels are kept by default. Turn them off to drop VTT voice tags and upper-case prefixes like JOHN: at the start of a line.
What does the subtitle checklist check?
It counts cues that overlap or run out of order, last under 5/6 of a second, exceed 20 characters per second, have a line over 42 characters, have more than two lines, or are empty, and lists the first few cue numbers for each. The limits come from the Netflix English Timed Text Style Guide. It is a quick checklist, not a compliance, accessibility or WCAG check.
Is this SRT to TXT converter free, and is my file uploaded?
It is free, needs no account, and nothing is uploaded. The file is read and converted in your browser. Files up to 5 MB are accepted.
Can it turn a TXT file back into SRT?
Not here: this tool goes one way, from subtitles to text. The TXT to SRT converter does the reverse, splitting plain text into cues with estimated times that are not synced to any recording. To change one subtitle format into another, use the SRT to VTT converter or the subtitle converter.
